The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday (October 18) nominated former test captain Intikhab Alam as a member of an independent committee which will investigate bowlers Shoaib Akhter and Mohammad Asif, who tested positive for anabolic steroids and were sent home from the Champions Trophy in India. Senior lawyer and former provincial governor Shahid Hamid and a specialist doctor will sit with Alam on the committee. Akhter and Asif say they did not knowingly take drugs, but could be banned for up to two years if their 'B' urine samples also test positive. PCB chairman Naseem Ashraf told a news conference in Karachi on Wednesday: "There will be no role for the board in it (the inquiry). It will be decided by a committee. Mr. Shahid Hamid, a former governor of Punjab (province) and a barrister of international fame will chair the committee. He is a man of very good position and fully independent in his decisions. He runs a famous and well-established international law firm. I have also nominated a former test captain, Intikhab Alam, who has a very good reputation; he is a man of integrity and level-headed; and thirdly there will be a doctor (on the committee) who is a specialist." Ashraf said the committee will give its recommendations in two weeks' time.
