Operation Leviathan is a campaign already underway by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to physically intervene with Japanese pirate whaling operations in the Southern Ocean. Sea Shepherd is bringing two ships, the Farley Mowat and the Robert Hunter (previously codenamed "Leviathan"), over 60 international volunteer crewmembers, a helicopter, and fast Zodiac inflatable boats. The whalers plan to murder over a thousand whales this winter of early 2007(which is actually summer in Antarctica), which includes Minke whales plus endangered fin and humpback whales. The Japanese Whaling Association has already threatened violence against the Farley Mowat and Paul Watson and his crew are risking their lives to protect the sentient, extremely intelligent mammals who share the planet with us. On 23 December 2006, the Farley Mowat and its crew finally departed from Melbourne, Australia to rendezvous with the Robert Hunter in the Southern Ocean.
