UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes briefed the press today on the June 3 - 5 High-Level World Food Security Conference in Rome. Quick facts: - Estimated 850 million people in the world suffer from hunger - Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) - 180 countries involved pledged to reduce trade restrictions - Represents a consensus of all key agencies - World Trade Orgaization (WTO), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), countries involved, NGOs, et al - Plan could cost appx $30 billion per year - Called on international community to increase assistance to help countries most negatively affected by high food prices - Secretary-General (SG) spent two days in Rome, delivered key-note speech - issued a 3-page media advisory that lays out key components of agreement - Task Force website for full document http://www.un.org/issues/food/taskforce/
