Off-Duty Officer Recounts Story Of Chase 2/22/06 11PM Marybel Rodriguez An alert off-duty Sweetwater Police Officer tried foiling a purse snatching Wednesday night and succeeded in catching the culprits but not before getting involved in a high speed chase in his brand new BMW. The officer spotted the purse snatching taking place at a gas station at Southwest 16th Street and 107th Avenue in West Miami-Dade while stopped at a red light. He tried to stop the two suspects, but they took off in their 2006 Honda. CBS4's Marybel Rodriguez spoke to Officer Maykel Leyva, who says he kept his distance from the suspects for safety reasons. Leyva sped off in his brand new BMW and starts following them up to the Dolphin Expressway (SR836). Reaching speeds of a 100 miles-per-hour, the suspects would not give up, connecting to the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway. Back-up officers joined the chase and the pair finally got off the Palmetto Expressway at NW 27th Avenue. They then kept driving to NW 130th Street and 22nd Avenue where one bailed on foot and was caught by police. The driver was arrested a couple of blocks away.
