NYC subway graffitti - Street Fighter 3 and Final Fight

The term graffiti referred to the inscriptions, figure drawings, etc., found on the walls of ancient sepulchers or ruins, as in the Catacombs of Rome or at Pompeii. The first known example of "modern style" graffiti survives in the ancient Greek city of Ephesus (in modern-day Turkey). Local guides say it is an advertisement for prostitution. Located near a mosaic and stone walkway, the graffiti shows a handprint that vaguely resembles a heart, along with a footprint and a number. This is believed to indicate that a brothel was nearby, with the handprint symbolizing payment. There is no way to pinpoint the true start of graffiti writing as we know it in modern day society. The pioneers that we spoke to will generally agree on a few specific points: the social unrest of the sixties, the invention of spray paint, and the re-emergence of gangs. All of which, played out on the landscape of the city walls, and eventually the subway trains and platforms. This video shows how Graffiti influenced and continues to influence modern society/culture. In this example, Final Fight came out in 1989 and Street Fighter 3 Third Strike in 1999.
