A government researcher told a Chinese newspaper that public reluctance to confront pollution was to blame, though government resistance may be a more likely cause. On Monday the Beijing News reported that the release of a "green GDP" report adding up the cost of pollution and ecological deterioration in 2005 had been postponed indefinitely. Senior expert and technical head of the study, Wang Jinnan, said that disclosing the cost of bad air, water and soil to the public had drawn fierce opposition from local officials eager to maintain growth.
