
(NECN/ABC) - Scientists have discovered that a large expanse of a musician's brain "shuts off" while improvising music. As a musician, Charles Limb is keenly aware of the difference between playing composed notes and jazz improvisation. "I've always wondered what takes place inside my head when I'm actually improvising something." And, as a doctor and researcher, he had the means to find out. Limb teamed up with National Institutes of Health Researcher Allen Braun to create a special keyboard that jazz musicians could play while inside an MRI brain scanner. read more
