It was a potential treasure trove for identity thieves and terrorists. The personal details of tens of thousands of people wanting to travel to the UK were online, unsecured and available to anyone who simply altered a website address. The information came from visa applications to the British High Commission in India and included home addresses, dates of births and even passport numbers. Yet the Government failed to act when warned about the problem more than a year ago and now online visa applications for two other countries have been halted.
