England coach Steve McClaren on Tuesday (November 14, 2006) handed a debut to Manchester City defender Micah Richards when he named his team for Wednesday's friendly in Amsterdam against the Netherlands. The 18-year-old Richards gets his chance after Manchester United's Gary Neville was ruled out because of injury. Everton striker Andy Johnson, who was overlooked for the World Cup finals this year, was also named in the team to partner Wayne Rooney in attack. Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, who missed the 2-0 defeat by Croatia last month, will play in midfield with Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Joe Cole. A 0-0 home draw with Macedonia and the 2-0 defeat by Croatia last month have left England facing a struggle to qualify from Euro 2008 Group E with seven points from four matches. Israel and Croatia, who both have seven points from three matches, play on Wednesday.
