Every December in households all over the world people of the Jewish faith gather to celebrate the joyous holiday of Chanukah. Yet few realize that the foundations of this celebration are rooted in bloody violence. It erupted here, in an obscure Judean village over two thousand years ago. At that time Judea was a minor province under the thumb of a despotic emperor. His relentless obsession to stamp out the Jewish religion would ignite a holy war. From this confrontation would arise the greatest military leader in Jewish history: Judah Maccabee. Under his guidance the Jews would topple an empire, regain control of their faith and inaugurate the Festival of Lights: Chanukah. Yet, how could Judah's small guerrilla forces defeat mighty armies ten times their size? What pagan rites of sacrilege were practiced on the holy temple of Jerusalem? And... why is the beloved Jewish story of Chanukah told only in the Catholic scriptures and not in the Hebrew Bible? These are but a few of the Mysteries of the Bible.
