Mum on trial for girl's murder

A jury in the case of a mother and her partner accused of starving a seven-year-old girl to death at their home is set to be sworn in. Angela Gordon and Junaid Abuhamza are charged with murdering Khyra Ishaq, who was pronounced dead after paramedics were called to her Birmingham home in the early hours of May 17 last year. The pair, of Leyton Road, Handsworth, face an alternative charge of "causing or allowing" the youngster's death, and five separate cruelty charges. They deny all charges against them. Gordon, 33, and Abuhamza, 29, will appear by video link at Birmingham Crown Court. Two days of legal argument will precede the opening of the prosecution's case against the defendants.
