MPs call for honours reform

An inquiry by MPs into the "cash for honours" controversy is to call for widespread changes to the way peerages are awarded, it has been reported.A report by the influential public administration select committee, due to be published on Wednesday, will call on Gordon Brown to end the role of prime ministers in the process.Under the recommendations peerages would no longer mean a seat in the House of Lords and all nominations for them would be made public. It is thought tougher anti-corruption laws, adding the power to prosecute MPs and peers for bribery and more power for the Electoral Commission watchdog will be among other proposals.A 19-month police investigation into allegations peerages were promised in return for financial support blighted the final months of Tony Blair's premiership. But the £1.4 million probe ended earlier this year without any charges being made.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
