Most of the suspects who were taken into custody in the latest Ergenekon operation yesterday have been brought to Istanbul. The suspects were detained for their connection to the former head of the Special Operations Unit of the National Police Department Ibrahim Sahin, who allegedly gave the order to assassinate the Armenian Patriarch Mesrop Mutafyan. Nearly 40 individuals were detained in simultaneous police operations staged in 12 cities including Ankara, Izmir, Kayseri and Sivas as part of the ongoing investigation into Ergenekon, a shady clandestine network of groups and individuals accused of plotting to overthrow the government. The new detainees include military officers, an academic with a left-wing political activist background, the former head of the Police Special Operations Unit, seven retired generals and the former head of the Higher Education Board. Meanwhile, police found weapons and ammunition in houses of the suspects in the central province of Sivas where the suspects got ready to assassinate the Armenian Patriarch. Ebru News/Agency
