MEXICO: Photographer of nudes, Spencer Tunick, launches exhibition in Mexico

Nude photographer Spencer Tunick returns to Mexico to exhibit the photographs he took in Mexico City last May. After waiting for six months, Mexicans will be able to view photographs taken by photographer Spencer Tunick in Mexico City's main square - the Zocalo last May 6, when some 18,000 people posed naked for the New Yorker. Nine large photographs and two testimonial videos form part of the exhibition called "Tunick en el Zocalo" (Tunick in the Zocalo), which has been on show since last Saturday (October 27) at the MUCA Museum (University Museum of Science and Art) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico City, in what has become the artists' largest turnout ever. Tunick said that Mexico City was one of his most successful photo shoots. "I am very lucky. I did wonderful work in Mexico, here, and I think it's just a really nice comprehensive exhibition. I am so proud of myself and I think this and my exhibition at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in England are my favorite exhibitions ever, so I think this is one of the best." Photographs taken by Tunick of some 100 women posed naked as Frida Kahlo in her house-museum, "La Casa Azul" (The blue house) are also displayed at the exhibition. These photographs were taken one day after the massive nude installation in the Zocalo as a way of paying homage to the famous Mexican painter. Some 16,000 photographs will be handed-out to those who posed nude last May and who correctly filled out their registration forms. A separate exhibition of Tunick's work before coming to Mexico is being shown at the "Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico" (Mexico City Museum) and shows 27 photographs taken by the artist in several locations around the world. A Mexican student who took part in the massive Zocalo nude installation, Cecilia Arenas, said that people from all walks of life turned out to participate. "One saw young and old people. There were people of all skin colour, sizes and beliefs and however we all had one objective, to be in the photograph - one was going to be one small dot in the photograph, there." Tunick's installations have recently taken place in Amsterdam, the Sagamore hotel in Miami Beach, Florida and at Greenpeace offices in Switzerland. The cities of London, Montreal, Santiago, Barcelona, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Caracas are some of the cities where Tunick has also staged his installations.
