3.A Big Messiah!1959.Novello score. Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Huddersfield Choral Society. "Rejoice, rejoice, greatly",sung by the fine Australian soprano, living in London, Elsie Morrison. I first heard her at the Royal Albert Hall,London, when I was down there as a student. Her soprano voice carried effortlessly to all parts of this very large concert hall. I sat there, absolutely transfixed--a good soprano,in her late 30's, wearing an electric green evening gown, and her neck adorned with jewels! She hardly moved when singing or sitting. Contralto, sitting beside her, full orchestra behind, and vast choir in tiers reaching as high as the pipe organ. The two male soloists,in evenung suits were seated beyond the conductor. Holding her score, she barely looked at it,her eyes fixed forward to the back of the Hall.No bobbing of head or other undesirable expressions of emphasis. As you hear it is all there, in the voice. Sadly, today, I think she is almost forgotten. For many years this was the favourite recording of the Messiah, and for some still is! Enjoy a Big Messiah! I'll probably put up another three or four Messiah clips in the next fortnight.
