MCS Corepunch - Dallas, TX - June 1, 2004

After the incredible Memorial Day weekend chase in Kansas, my friend, Alister Chapman, a videojournalist from England, and I targeted a POS supercell in mid-Texas. Aftr a few hours of nothing, we decided to knock it off and head back to OKC. About 30 minutes later, things changed rapidly. A tornado crossed the Interstate about 100 yards in front of us and we got caught up in a large mesoscale convective system (MCS) for about 2 hours. While attempting to drive out of it, I did a live phone interview on The Weather Channel with my friend, Jim Cantore. In all of my years of shooting weather for The Weather Channel, this was the most harrowing experience I have had. Alister had one of the new XM Radio radar units and as the MCS grew, I began to look like a hurricane, with an eye, to boot. During the height of the action, we called OnStar to report the tornado... the agent on the other end of the line thought we were nuts!
