Manchester United retain title

Manchester United have retained the Barclays Premier League title with a 2-0 victory at Wigan.Ryan Giggs, who marked his record-equalling 758th appearance for Manchester United, steered the club to a second successive title with the nerve-settling second goal, ten minutes from time.Cristiano Ronaldo had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 33 minutes - his 41st goal of the campaign - but with so much at stake a Wigan equaliser could have changed everything. The Welsh winger, now on the same mark as Sir Bobby Charlton, stepped off the bench to find the target in the 80th minute with a cool finish. The result ensured that United finished top at the expense of Chelsea, who drew 1-1 with Bolton at Stamford Bridge.United ended the season on 87 points, two points clear of the west Londoners. They had looked set to at least win their own match when Andriy Shevchenko struck in the 62nd minute at a time when United were already leading. But as Giggs made the result safe for United, Chelsea's spirits flagged and they eventually succumbed to a Bolton equaliser in the dying seconds from Matt Taylor.Worryingly, Chelsea were also rocked by the loss of captain John Terry who was carried off in the first half with a shoulder injury and could now miss next week's Champions League final in Moscow, where they will be hoping for revenge against Manchester United.
