Magnolia's at the Mill is a definite jewel in the heart of funky, eclectic Purcellville. This dining destination in Western Loudoun County has a buoyant vibe, but also a steady hand at the helm which is evident in everything from the wide-ranging menu to the keen and congenial staff. It has something for everyone, from the family on the go, to the sports bar enthusiast, to the relaxed patio diner. Magnolia's is tucked inside a 1905 mill and its rustic past is a visible asset. Simple clapboard siding and exposed beams give the restaurant a cozy ambiance, while the wheels and pulleys, still suspended in the ceiling, speak of its hard-working history. This upbeat gregarious spot will win your heart and make you hanker to return time and time again. Executive Chef Mark Marrocco successfully married the rural atmosphere to a modern sensibility. From his slick, open kitchen, he produces a menu that is influenced both by his Italian background and by Southern traditions. A dish of almond-coated warm Wisconsin goat cheese accompanies a sundried tomato vinaigrette and frisee salad, complimented by a crostini, expertly grilled to disperse the warm, velvety cheese. The house favorite is the lacquered salmon, positioned over wasabi mashed potatoes with a soy glaze, sesame seeds, and pickled ginger. The sweet taste of the salmon blends with the spice of the wasabi and detonates an explosion of flavors.The hickory grill section of the menu is purely delicious. The Mediterranean shrimp and white cheddar stoneground grits is a dish worthy of a drive. The skewered shrimp are grilled to exactness, and the taste of hickory plays subtly in your mouth. The grits, a Virginia delicacy, are creamy in texture and perfectly flavored by the cheese.
