Madonna and stars at the Met Gala, New York

Kate Moss turned heads at fashion's biggest night of the year, while Madonna got a thumbs down for her choice of outfit. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala in New York is the one night of the fashion calendar when all the hottest A-listers are guaranteed to turn up. Editor-in-chief of American Vogue Anna Wintour, Victoria Beckham, Cindy Crawford, Gisele Bundchen, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Willis, Heidi Klum and Kate Bosworth were just some of the names to grace the red carpet and provide the full-on glamour for which the event has become renowned. Supermodel Kate, who was co-hosting the event, looked like a Greek goddess in her gold lame asymmetrical toga dress and matching metallic turban. The 35-year-old stunned photographers as she posed with designer Marc Jacobs. But Madonna, desperate to put her worries over the adoption bid of Mercy behind her, also made a big impression on the catwalk. But for all the wrong reasons. Dressed in thigh-high leather boots, a short dress that could have last been worn on the set of a western film and a strange scrunchie on her head that messily pulled up her hair at the back, the queen of pop hit a duff note on what was the Big Apple's biggest night in fashion. Elsewhere, Victoria Beckham showed off her slim figure in a short dress with long train, also by Marc Jacobs. Jessica Biel was stunning on a red Versace frock. It was a look that she topped off with the best accessory of the night in boyfriend Justin Timberlake. Pregnant supermodel Heidi Klum won the award for the biggest dress of the night. Her sweeping midnight blue and black J Mendel gown featured masses of material. Twiggy and Agyness Deyn, sporting a stunning 50s style platinum hairdo, flew the flag for Britain in Burberry.
