Emma Rouault is at her convent school, when her father brings news of the death of Emma's mother. Shortly afterwards, she is expelled by the nuns for her lack of vocational devotion. Resuming life at home, it's not long before the dreamy youngster falls headlong into a real-life romance and is swept away by the handsome Dr. Charles Bovary. But after a disappointing first few months of a conventional marriage Emma realizes that married life will not bring the romance and passion that she craves. She is almost prepared to accept her fate when an invitation to a major society ball re-ignites her awareness of the possibilities of romance.
