Looking Ahead: Long-Term Prospects for Africa's Agricultural Development and Food Security

Dr. Mark Rosegrant, Director of the Environment and Production Technology Division at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) examines: • What is the future for food production, demand, and trade for Africa? • Will current policies provide acceptable progress on childhood malnutrition and health? • If not, can improved policies and investments achieve food security? Rosegrant states that increasing food insecurity under current trends will leave 42 million children still malnourished in 2020. He cites investments and policy changes as ways to cultivate a difference. There is the choice of 16 million children malnourished in 2020 (with increased investment and strong policy reform) or 57 million (with declining investment and weak policy reform); Rosegrant believes this is the outcome of increased investment in human resources vs. none.
