Anura Bandaranaike, had been in active politics for 35 years and he has represented Parliament for 31 years. He was the only son of two former Prime Ministers S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Born on 15th February 1949, he had his academic studies at Royal College Colombo. He holds a Degree on Political Science and History from the Oxford University. He served as the Advisor on Foreign Affairs when his mother was the Prime Minister from 1970 to 77. Mr. Bandaranaike entered Parliament for the first time contesting the Nuwara Eliya-Maskeliya seat during the 1977 election from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Mr. Bandaranaike was appointed as the Opposition Leader after the 1983 general election and held several Ministerial portfolios in addition to being elected as Speaker under the UNP regime in the Fourth Parliament with the blessings of both government and opposition members. After rejoining the SLFP, he held a number of Ministerial portfolios. Mr. Bandaranaike was the only brother of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga. He discharged an exemplary service in Sri Lankan politics following the footsteps of his father and mother. Anura Bandaranaike who was engaged in active politics for 35 years, had represented Parliament for 31 years.
