The "Kinnor" was the 3000 year old lyre once played by King David, as he danced before the Ark of the Covenant, and which was then played by my very own ancient Levite ancestors, in the Temple of Jerusalem, to accompany the singing of the Levitical Choir. The 1st century Jewish historian, Josephus Flavius, who actually witnessed the ancient Temple Services in Jerusalem, described the Kinnor as having 10 strings. In this lesson, I discuss how the Kinnor may well have been played to accompany the voice during these ancient Temple Services - it is actually possible to play chord progressions on a lyre! This ancient lyre playing technique (known as "string-blocking" or the "block & strum" technique) has actually survived to the present day, in the amazing techniques of the "Krar" lyre players of Eritrea in East Africa: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=7IkMAaOaesY I have tuned the lyre here to the traditional "Ahava Raba" mode of traditional instrumental Jewish Klezmer music, bottom string to top: DE(Tonic)FG#ABCDE(Tonic)F Maybe this particularly Jewish-sounding scale is as it is, because ONLY if the 10 string of the Kinnor are tuned to this particular set of musical intervals which make up the "Ahava Raba" mode, is it possible to play these particular minor chord progressions...which once must have accompanied the singing of the Levitical Choir over 2000 years ago, in the Temple of Jerusalem???
