Karadzic flown to Holland for tribunal
Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has arrived in the Netherlands to face war crimes charges.Karadzic was escorted by masked officials from the Serbian secret service as he was taken from prison to the capital Belgrade's airport in a convoy of black jeeps before boarding a plane for Rotterdam.The Serb government said the extradition had been approved by the Justice Ministry and the Belgrade district court.The transfer followed disturbances on the streets of the Belgrade where ultra-nationalist Karadzic supporters clashed with police during a large demonstration.Karadzic landed in Rotterdam just after 6am before being transferred by helicopter to the Scheveningen detention facility near The Hague.He faces two charges of genocide for the 43-month siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 massacre of some 8,000 Muslims at Srebrenica, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War Two.He was arrested last week after 11 years on the run, most recently living under an assumed name as a bearded, long-haired alternative healer.His delivery to The Hague is key to Serbia securing closer ties with the European Union and his arrest was seen as a clear pro-Western signal by the new government, sworn in earlier this month.Around 10,000 hardline nationalists, many brought by bus from rural nationalist strongholds, showed their support for him in downtown Belgrade, chanting his name and holding up giant banners with his picture.The demonstrations led to clashes with police and around 45 people were injured in the disturbances.
