Justice for Rachelle Palang

Rachelle Mae Palang was an exceptional person. She was a student organizer and a writer. In May 2008, she aced the Nurses Licensure Exam and she just recently took and passed the National Medical Admissions Test. Her dream was to become a doctor and serve the poor and the oppressed. That dream, however, never became a reality. Last month, Sept 18 2008 to be exact, Rachelle was killed by elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) during an alleged encounter between the AFP and New People's Army soldiers. She was shot at point-blank range - her face barely recognizable. Until today, the Military, led by their commander-in-chief, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has not taken responsibility of Rachelle's despicable killing. None of us here in the US personally know Rachelle but her story is grimly familiar. Rachelle represents more than 900 other victims of political killings in the Philippines. Her death is yet another bitter example of how the government that is supposed to protect the people is actually the number one perpetrator of violence and deceit. We condemn Arroyo and her cronies for all their atrocious activities. To all those who have been martyred, know that your legacy will never be forgotten. We, the Filipino youth in the US, will continue to seek for justice, no matter what it takes. Your struggle will be our struggle! Down with the US-Arroyo tyranny! Justice for Rachelle Palang! Justice for all victims of political killings in the Philippines! -ANAKBAYAN NY/NJ, Seattle, LA
