So you think garbage stops being your problem the minute it leaves your backyard? Think again—the effects are far worse than you think. Its important to reassure your students that although their small steps are making a big difference, the government and other institutions are also doing something to remedy the problem. Remind them that as long as they keep doing their part, they are significantly contributing to a worldwide effort in saving and protecting the environment from destruction. - Republic Act 9003 aims to radically transform and improve the solid waste management sector. Its key elements include a national ecology center that will provide information, training, and networking services, mandatory segregation and recycling of solid waste at the barangay level; formation of solid waste management boards at the provincial, city, and municipal levels; and forming multi-purpose environment cooperatives in every local government unit. - Under RA 9003, The National Solid Waste Management Commission will develop a national status report and framework. Local governments will be required to come up with 10-year solid waste management plans, divert 25% of solid waste through re-use, recycling, and composting, and establish reclamation and buy-back centers for recyclables. - Most eco-aides who collect recyclable materials in Metro Manila are part of a network organized by the Linis-Ganda Foundation. The network includes the Metro Manila Federation of Environmental Multi-Purpose Cooperatives, 572 junk shops, and 2,500 junk shop owners. This helps in the collection of factory-returnable materials, or disposed materials that companies are willing to buy back. - RA 9003 will also allow the government to work towards closing down hazardous dump sites.
