IRAQ: Three bombs kill 10, wound over 40 in eastern and central Baghdad

Two bombs exploded in close succession in eastern Baghdad on Monday (February 19, 2007), killing six people and wounding 40 others, police said. They said a bomb exploded in the eastern Shi'ite neighbourhood of Za'faraniya, and when people gathered and police vehicles arrived at the site another bomb went off. Three of the dead and 10 of the wounded were policemen. At least three police vehicles were wrecked in the blast, one of them severely. "It is a terrorist act, but God willing they will not destroy us. It is a bomb planted by a coward to target police patrols," said a police officer at the blast scene. In a separate attack, a bomb planted inside a minibus in central Baghdad killed four people on Monday (February 19), witnesses and police said. The explosion blew out the top of the bus in Karrada district, a religiously mixed area. Police said the blast was caused by a bomb planted inside the bus. They said two were killed and four wounded in the attack, but a Reuters photographer saw four charred bodies lying on the ground after the blast. Police and fire engines converged on the site as U.S. forces sealed off the blast scene. On Sunday (February 18), two car bombs tore through a crowded market area of a mainly Shi'ite district in eastern Baghdad, killing 60 people in the worst attack since U.S. and Iraqi troops launched a security crackdown in the city last week. The Baghdad crackdown, dubbed Operation Imposing Law, is seen as a last-ditch attempt to avert all-out civil war between majority Shi'ites and minority Sunni Arabs. Also on Sunday, one civilian was killed and two others wounded when a car parked near car workshop south of Baghdad exploded, police and witnesses said. The blast took place in the town of Mahmudiya, about 30 km (20 miles) south of the capital Baghdad. The town, which has a mixed Shi'ite and Sunni population, has been a scene of frequent bombings over the past months.
