France and Italy have warned that executing Saddam Hussein could push Iraq into outright civil war. After a meeting with his French counterpart, the Italian foreign minister Massimo D'Alema urged Iraq not to carry out the sentence of death by hanging imposed on the former Iraqi dictator. It follows similar entreaties from Finland which currently holds the EU presidency and has stated that EU members are against the death penalty. Tony Blair was questioned repeatedly on the subject at his monthly press conference. He became irritated when reporters pressed him to state clearly whether Saddam should hang, even though the Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett had already made a statement.
