Iraqi Vice-President Tareq al-Hashemi has met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for his second round of talks with Iranian officials. Iraqi vice president Tareq al-Hashemi met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Monday (March 12), the second day of his visit to Tehran. Hashemi leads the Iraqi Islamic Party, part of the Iraqi parliament's largest Sunni Arab political bloc. Hashemi had met Iranian First Vice-President Parviz Davoudi on Sunday (March 11). The Iraqi vice-president's visit to Iran followed an international conference in Baghdad on Saturday (March 10), at which Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki urged regional and world powers to help end sectarian violence in his country. Saturday's meeting was a rare opportunity for Washington and its adversaries Tehran and Damascus to sit together at the same table. Washington accuses Syria and non-Arab Iran of supporting militants in Iraq, which both of them deny.
