Investigation Starts on Alleged JITEM Executions

A prosecutor on Tuesday authorized investigators to locate and open the wells, which was claimed to use by a secret gendarmerie intelligence unit, JITEM, in Turkiye's southwestern region. The Bar Association of Sirnak, Turkiye's south eastern province, filed a criminal compliant in regard to recent statements by Tuncay Guney, who claimed that numerous people had been executed by JITEM in the 1990s. According to Guney's statement, executed bodies were burned with acid and buried in wells located near facilities owned by the state-owned Turkish Pipeline Corporation in Silopi, district of Sirnak. After the petition prepared by the Bar, Silopi Prosecutor's Office authorized the investigators to locate and open the wells. "I wish people, who have information on the issue, to appeal to the prosecutor's office in the city or share the information with the Bar," a lawyer from the Bar, Nusirevan Elci told Cihan News Agency.
