Invasive species

Invasive species represent one of the leading threats to biodiversity in Europe. Their presence disrupts ecosystems and threatens the survival of native species, as well as having a significant socioeconomic impact. The cost of managing the damage caused by these species in Europe is estimated at €12 billion. Tackling this problem is therefore absolutely essential. The European Union has set the goal of halting the decline in biodiversity by 2010. The fight against invasive species has consequently been defined as a priority in the Sixth Environmental Action Programme of the European Commission.
