A lesbian couple have failed in a High Court bid to have their Canadian marriage recognised in Britain. Celia Kitzinger and Sue Wilkinson were lawfully married in Canada, and had argued it was unacceptable to downgrade their marriage to a civil partnership in this country. But the judge, Sir Mark Potter, said that although English law doesn't consider same-sex partnerships as inferior to marriage, it does maintain "as a matter of objective fact" that they are different. The couple say they plan to appeal.
