Actress Leslie Ash opened a new centre dedicated to combating hospital "superbug" infections similar to the condition which nearly claimed her life two years ago. The Centre for Healthcare Associated Infections at the University of Nottingham brings together leading experts to research antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA and clostridium difficile. Ms Ash, who is the patron of the centre, nearly died when she was struck down by MSSA - a strain of MRSA - while a patient at a London hospital in 2004.
