Government ministers say they are finding the government's plans for reform of maternity care services impossible to support in their constituencies. The plans will reduce the number of childbirth facilities in England, whilst offering expectant mothers a choice about the type of birth they want. Health Minister Ivan Lewis is opposing the closure of a maternity unit in his own constituency, although he is responsible for implementing the new policy. Government adviser Dr Sheila Shribman has said that, in fact, new mothers are being deprived of choices about how they have their baby, and the new policy puts their health at risk at huge cost to the NHS.
