HEALTH: FSA recommend folic acid to be added to food products

Experts on the board of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have unanimously called for folic acid to be routinely added to bread or flour as a way of cutting birth defects. Between 700 and 900 pregnancies every year result in babies with defects such as spina bifida. Taking folic acid supplements can reduce such a risk by 70 per cent. Nine-year old Alex Charles has been left permanently disabled by the condition and his father Anthony Charles is backing the new proposals.
