A medical disciplinary panel has been told that the doctor who first suggested a link between the MMR vaccine and autism paid children five pounds for blood samples at his son's birthday party. Dr Andrew Wakefield and two of his colleagues are accused of acting unethically while carrying out their controversial research, first published in 1998. The panic which followed publication led to a dramatic drop in the number of children given the triple vaccine and a corresponding rise of measles cases among children. All three deny charges of professional misconduct but could be struck off if the GMC (General Medical Council) finds against them.
