Head Scarf Compared to Nazi Clothing
A US reporter who interviewed the CHP deputy chairman published a portion of the interview on his blog recently and said that Onur Oymen compared the Muslim head scarf to Nazi brown shirts and Italian fascist Black Shirts. Oymen has denied that he made the comparison. /// US reporter Dion Nissenbaum had interviewed Oymen in his Ankara office at the CHP headquarters for an article titled "Turkish court threatens to oust government that lifted headscarf ban," which appeared on April 18 in the world section of the McClatchy media group's Web site. On Monday the Hurriyet daily published a story titled "'Headscarf is like a fascist uniform'" with reference to Nissenbaum's interview and quoted some of Oymen's remarks. Oymen, at a press conference at the Parliament, said Nissenbaum had used his own impressions in what he wrote, not verbatim. Oymen also complained about Hurriyet's title giving the impression that he had likened wearing a headscarf to wearing a fascist uniform. Reporter Nissenbaum asks the reader to judge for themselves whether the quotes are authentic or not. Meanwhile, a journalist from Star daily in Turkiye underlines that Oymen is notorious with his forgetfulness, for instance, he objected to the Customs Union in the frame of the EU although it was he who had signed the agreement of the Customs Union on behalf of Turkiye.
