Hammers hammered by £5.5m fine

West Ham have been fined £5.5 million for breaking two Premier League regulations relating to the signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. The Argentina internationals were signed from Brazilian club Corinthians in August 2006 but were part-owned by the company Media Sports Investment, which is against competition rules.MSI owner Kia Joorabchian then tried to take control of the club but his bid fell through and Icelandic businessman Eggert Magnusson took over at Upton Park. The Hammers could have been punished by a points deduction, which would almost certainly have relegated them from the Premiership. But history shows that clubs often manage to overturn that level of punishment on appeal and a lengthy legal battle could have proved embarrasing as West Ham could have been fighting to be reinstated in the top flight.Tevez remains a West Ham player but Mascherano left the club to join Liverpool in the January transfer window.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
