Haka welcome for MV DOULOS arrival in Auckland

I went back to DOULOS in June 2008. it was winter downunder in New Zealand. i took the footage on the ship's arrival. From www.doulos.org Auckland welcome warms cold crew 11 Jun, 2008 :: Auckland, New Zealand Crew used to warmer climes shivered despite coats and scarves as they arrived in Auckland, the 'City of Sails'. Tugs waiting to guide Doulos into harbour turned tight circles in welcome. After the gangway was lowered, the Tamaki High School singing group Kapa Haka sang and danced in the traditional style of the native Maori people. One student, dressed as a warrior, danced a challenge to Captain Ashley McDonald (Australia). As he stared into the Captain's eyes, he lowered a cluster of red feathers to the ground. The Captain stooped to accept the offering and the symbolic peace accord was complete. After speaking to the gathered crowd, Captain McDonald greeted each student according to their tradition 'hongi' -- pressing noses together!
