Gun Toting Russian Soldiers Rob Israeli Journalists In Gori

Four Israeli journalists, including reporters from Haaretz, Channel Two and Y-net, were robbed at gunpoint by Russian soldiers in the Georgian city of Gori on Thursday. None of the Israelis was injured in the incident, which occurred as a number of foreign journalists gathered near a Russian checkpoint stationed at the entrance to the city. The Russian troops opened fire on the journalists without warning, trying to disperse the crowd. Meanwhile, a Russian soldier armed with a Kalashnikov rifle approached the vehicle in which the Israeli journalists were traveling. H epointed his weapon at the Ynet reporter and demanded the keys to the car, shot towards the journalis's foot and then fled in the car. The four journalists escaped unharmed to Georgian forces stationed 300 meters away and contacted their head offices after realising that their passports were in the vehicle along with other possessions. Close to twenty minutes later their car was returned to them with all their possessions intact. Meanwhile on Thursday Russian troops deployed in Gori declared they have no intention of leaving Georgian soil despite the shakey ceasefire that went into effect a day earlier.08/14/08
