Greece Wildfires Kill 40

At least 40 people, including firefighters, have died in forest fires raging in Greece. Yesterday, a total of 170 fires broke out in the country. The situation is especially grave in the south of the Peloponnese peninsula. A state of emergency has been declared in three provinces. The country’s Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has arrived in the disaster zone. During the night a fire also broke out in Athens’ prominent region of Philothea. The Greek government has sent an appeal for help from the EU.
