Glitter's 'free to travel anywhere'

Convicted child molester Gary Glitter will be free to travel anywhere when he is released from prison on Tuesday, according to his lawyer. The former glam rock star, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was jailed for sex crimes against two girls aged ten and 11 in March 2006. Glitter will be deported from Vietnam and says he wants to return to the UK. But his lawyer Le Thanh Kinh said Glitter has a British passport and could go anywhere he can get a visa. The 64-year-old will leave Thu Duc jail in south Vietnam around noon local time - 4am UK time - and be driven under police escort to Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh. But there are no direct flights to London, allowing Glitter the option of buying another ticket when he changes planes. The news will raise fears he could restart his life as a sex tourist. Mr Kinh said Glitter told him he wanted to return to the UK, had a ticket to London and was eagerly anticipating his release. "He is looking forward to coming back tomorrow. He is thinking about being free but worried about reporters," he said. "He is okay but he is worried about his health. He has problems with his hearing and his heart." If Glitter does fly back to Britain, he will be met at the airport by police and required to sign the register of sex offenders. He will then be subject to monitoring and will have to tell the police where he plans to live and if he plans to go abroad. He could also face an order prohibiting him from going near children or using the internet. Glitter still reportedly earns more than £50,000 a year from overseas royalties on his 1970s hits, including I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am). He was jailed in Britain in 1999 after a computer technician found thousands of images of child pornography on his computer. He later moved to Spain, Cuba and later Cambodia - from where he was deported in 2003 over alleged sex offences.
