GERMANY: Eleven people were injured after they fell off a truck while filming Tom Cruise's new movie "Valkyrie" in Berlin

One person was hospitalised overnight in Berlin but German police said they didn't believe "anyone famous" was injured in the accident. Eleven people were injured when they fell off the back of a truck during the shooting of Tom Cruise's latest film in Berlin, police said on Monday (August 20). In "Valkyrie," Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who fronted the failed attempt by a group of largely military conspirators to assassinate Adolf Hitler in July 1944. The 11 fell from the truck when a side panel burst open as it drove around a corner in central Berlin on Sunday evening, police said. Ten were given medical attention, one of them was seriously hurt and had to remain in hospital. Filming was halted after the accident. "We have no findings to suggest anyone famous was involved in the accident," said a police spokesman, adding he did not know whether it would affect the shoot this week. A spokesman for United Artists said the truck was travelling at less than 10 mph (16 kmh) when wood slats gave way, sending the actors tumbling onto the road. They added: "the movie's principal production unit, which includes director Bryan Singer and star Tom Cruise, was not filming when the mishap occurred, and it is not expected to have any impact on the film's production schedule." Cruise has come under fire from politicians and the Stauffenberg family for his role in the movie due to his involvement with Scientology, which the German government views as a cult. The conspiracy's importance to the post-war rehabilitation of Germany has meant that dramatizations of the events of July 20, 1944, tend to be subject to particular scrutiny.
