A volcano which is spewing out lava in the Galapagos Islands could threaten wildlife, according to officials from the Galapagos National Park. Television pictures show clouds of gases and smoke rising into the sky around La Cumbre volcano and streams of molten lava pouring into the sea. Officials from the park have said that iguanas, marine species and other marine wildlife could be affected by the eruption as the lava drains into the sea. The island of Fernandina, where La Cumbre sits, is uninhabited and the volcano has been inactive for around four years. The Galapagos islands are part of Ecuador and lie about 600 miles west of the South American mainland. English naturalist Charles Darwin developed his evolution theory after studying their unique animal population.
