G8 leaders make climate pledge

The leaders of the G8 nations have agreed to make "substantial cuts" in greenhouse gases, but they fall short of EU targets.The European Union wants to halve emissions by 2050 and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel was keen to set a firm goal for cuts, but that was resisted by the United States.An EU source said: "They agreed on the need for substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions."The meeting in the German town of Heiligendamm meant US President George Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met face-to-face for the first time since Mr Putin accused the United States of trying to force its will on the world.Mr Bush meanwhile, has assured Russia that plans to base a radar system in the Czech Repbulic do not pose a threat.The two men were seen smiling and looked relaxed despite their differences.© Independent Television News Limited 2007.
