The Government has relaxed some restrictions put in place following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Surrey. From midnight on 8th August 2007, animals in England can be moved to slaughter except in the 10 kilometre protection zone around farms in Surrey which have been affected by the disease. Scotland and Wales have lifted similar bans. But the government's Chief Veterinary Officer has ordered the culling of animals at a third farm in Surrey suspected of having foot and mouth. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the cause of the outbreak and focusing on the drainage system at the Merial Animal Health laboratory at Pirbright. Farmers warn of devastating economic consequences from not being able to move livestock or harvest grain crops.
