Continuously evolving imagery, guided by transpersonal research and sacred plant teachers, focusses a gathering and invites the viewer to participate in the creative pas de deux of visionary experience. Circuit VIII’s work is profoundly influenced by the work of transpersonal psychology (such as Stanislav Grof’s LSD and the Realms of the Human Unconscious) and other work on the phenomenology of visionary experience (notably Benni Shannon’s pioneering work on Ayahuasca visions, The Antipodes of the Mind). The work of these researchers brings startling new insights into the processes of cognition and perception in visionary states, particularly the correlations between certain classes of imagery and their associated psychological material, the progress of visionary experiences, and, indeed, the limits of language and even visual perception/creativity. These areas of study have, naturally, profound implications for the artist working with an awareness of the neurophysiological contexts in which his or her work may be viewed. In a process directly, and deliberately, analogous to the use of sampling by psychedelic music producers, Circuit VIII incorporates carefully selected linguistic cues from the works of Terrence McKenna and other luminaries of the ‘visionary renaissance.’ Like the images of Roberto Venosa, images which blur the boundaries of abstraction and mathematical generation, and more representational styles, produce a sense of ‘glyptoglossia’ - ‘the visual cousin of glossolalia’ - images from which deeply subjective meaning and form emerge in the receptive process of viewing.
