Family Businesses – The Lorenz von Ehren Tree Farm

Luxurious trees and fine hedges adorn Champs Elysées in Paris and the Chancellor's Office in Berlin, as well as Swedish castles and English parks. There's been a green thumb in the von Ehren family for generations. The current head of the family business Bernhard von Ehren was trained as a gardener before taking over the firm with its 140 employees two years ago. The tree farm encompasses some 500 hectares on which 750,000 trees and hedges are raised. Specializing in large trees, the Hamburg firm does an annual business of 21 million euros, about half of it abroad. Linda Vierecke visited Germany's premier tree farm and profiled a family business that's been going strong since 1865.
