Expedition to Underwater Volcanoes of the Northeast Pacific

The VISIONS '05 ocean expedition, led by oceanography professors John Delaney and Deborah Kelley of the University of Washington, involves several complex research projects being conducted by U.S. and Canadian scientists. A key project investigates the links in seismic deformation of oceanic crust, venting of nutrient-rich fluids and microbial productivity. The expedition also tested the concept of a regional ocean observatory that connects undersea data-monitoring stations with science labs on land.
