Efforts to track down and rescue five Britons kidnapped in Ethiopia have taken on a new urgency. Three of their abandoned vehicles have been found in a remote village, one burnt out and the others riddled with bullets. Inside the 4 x 4's, the group's luggage, shoes, and mobile phones remain, but the passengers are still missing. The group were taken as they travelled in the Afar desert, a barren expanse of salt mines and volcanoes 500 miles from the capital Addis Ababa. As diplomats work frantically to find out what has happened to the Britons, there is still precious little known about exactly who is behind the kidnap or what they want. Tonight there are reports that SAS forces are preparing for a rescue operation to try to recover the kidnapped Britons.
